How to recycle in Istanbul?
Government recycling system
Istanbul lacks a formal government-operated recycling system. Instead, the city relies heavily on informal recyclers, often seen on the streets with large bags collecting materials like cardboard, metal, and hard plastic. These individuals do not follow a set schedule, making their appearance in neighborhoods unpredictable. Residents can leave recyclable materials on the street or near trash bins, but there is no guarantee that these items will be picked up by the recyclers before the regular waste trucks, which typically transport everything to the landfill.
In some modern, touristic areas of Istanbul, such as Beyoğlu, Beşiktaş, and Kadıköy, there are occasional recycling initiatives spearheaded by the local mayors. These initiatives often involve setting up recycling points. However, these programs' continuity and effectiveness can vary significantly with changes in local leadership. Recycling in Istanbul can be challenging but is feasible with the right knowledge. Private companies handle most recycling, with carriers collecting paper, plastic, and cans from the trash. Glass should be separated and placed in designated bottle-shaped metal containers.
For electronic waste and batteries, special programs and containers are available. In some areas like Caddebostan, there are large blue recycling containers for paper, plastic, and cans. Despite limited public recycling facilities, efforts by individuals can significantly contribute to waste reduction.
Due to high inflation, there are no operational eco-centers in Istanbul, making organized recycling efforts even more challenging. High inflation has also led to the absence of zero-waste shops in Istanbul, further complicating sustainable living practices for residents.
Where to find refill water stations
and discounts for reusable bottles and cups?
Refill stations
Istanbul encourages sustainable water usage with refill stations available at places like Istanbul Airport. Istanbul's historic fountains, built centuries ago to provide free public drinking water, are still in use today. These fountains, known as çeşmes, offer an important resource for locals and tourists alike, though modern concerns about water quality mean not all are deemed safe to drink from.

Istanbul Local Markets
Istanbul is home to numerous local markets that appear weekly in various neighborhoods across the city. These markets are vibrant hubs where you can find a variety of local and seasonal fruits, vegetables, and sometimes fish. Additionally, some markets offer clothes and home utilities, though these items may not always be locally sourced. Below, we provide information about markets in popular tourist areas and the biggest one in historical center of Istanbul:
